Metrologist Technician

Toyota Boshoku America, Inc Jackson, TN (Onsite) Full-Time

I. General Summary: Provides technical assistance in support of the quality systems to ensure product design/quality specifications are maintained.  Job includes the programming and operation of coordinate measuring machines (CMM), FARO, Digital Scanning equipment and calibration of gages both variable and attribute, and any other equipment deemed essential by QC Management.

II. Essential Job Functions:

A. Reviews product prints and design specifications to develop programming for measuring equipment, such as a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM), Faro Arm, and Digital 3D scanning devices (such as Keyence VL-570 series). Additional technology may be adopted as needed to meet measurement requirements and demands. 

B. Performs dimensional layouts of component parts, finish goods, and tooling, utilizing such types of equipment as stated above.

C. Creates bubble maps to correlate inspection data in order to show results of inspection.

D. Maintains files of product blueprints, PCR's, and calibration records.

E. Provides support for design of gages and coordinates, when necessary, the outside sourcing of new gages including submitting design to job shops for bids.

F. Performs gage capability studies, documents the results.

G. Supports others as requested in support of quality control plans, verification and documentation, research and development, and engineering.

H. Performs and/or participates in 5S housekeeping, team activities, dress codes, safety rules and all other applicable company policies and procedures.

I. Maintain CMM, FARO, and Digital Scanning equipment in working condition with basic cleaning and maintenance to ensure calibration maintenance.

J. Performs other duties as requested by the QC Manager or representative.

III. Minimum Qualifications/Requirements: 

Education: 

• Completion of high school and technical training that provided sufficient advanced math and computer skills with related technical exposure are required.

Experience:

• Three (3) years of Automotive Manufacturing experience or two (2) years technical training with CAD / Tooling emphasis is required. Work experience within a test lab, R & D and manufacturing setting would be helpful.

Personal/Technical Skills:

• Good communication skills both written and verbal with the ability to keep good records is required.

• Ability to read a blueprint is required.

• Basic mathematical aptitude.

• Ability to work with minimal supervision and multitask is required.

• Must have a thorough knowledge of the company products, terminology and design specifications.

• Requires the ability to read and interpret geometrically dimensional tolerancing blueprints, ISO standards, ANSI/ASME Y14.5M (1994) and related technical documents.  

• Must have advanced math skills including trigonometry and geometry.  

• Must have computer skills and proficiency in specified software applications ranging from Excel to SPC data bases.  

• Must be familiar with company policies and procedures for the out-sourcing of test and inspection measuring equipment.  

• Requires technical skills and knowledge for programming CMM, and calibration of attribute and variable gages.  

• Must have thorough knowledge of relevant sections of applicable quality system standards and associated documents such as PPAP, MSA, APQP and SPC manuals.

• Responsible for accuracy: Programs CMM and calibrates gages on which others depend for product accuracy to specifications, control plans and quality testing.  Most errors would be detected during subsequent procedures; however, undetected errors could have far reaching affects and damage company reputation.

Language Skills:

• Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.

Computer/Software:

• Solid working knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office and other computer-based applications (e.g., MS Word, MS PowerPoint, Outlook, Internet, etc.).

• Experience with Polyworks software is a plus.

IV. Work Environment/Conditions:

Office:  Open Office Environment, moderate noise level. Interacts frequently with engineering, QC lab and coworkers in the exchange of information and assistance.  Outside contacts could be with parent company design engineering, suppliers of test/ inspection equipment and calibration/repair services.  Contacts require professional etiquette, tact and courtesy.

Plant:  Standard automotive plant environment with moderate noise level.  PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) such as safety glasses, steel toe shoes, hearing protection, etc. may be required in engineering, manufacturing, or industrial areas.  Personal attire standards may apply.

Travel: < 5%

V. Physical Demands:  Ability to sit and work on a computer for extensive periods of time is required.  While performing the duties of this job, the team member is required to talk, see, and hear.  The team member must be capable of walking, sitting, and standing for extended periods of time.  May be occasionally required to lift up to 30 pounds. 

VI. Confidential Data: Has access to company part print files and new product information and development discussions, which could affect the competitive posture of the company or damage customer relationships if disclosed.
